They already have a sordid reputation of spinning cover for the government, and they still continue to do so even after getting lambasted online time and time again. They are really HOPELESS. Recently, they posted a piece on the increase (yet another) in petrol price as the government discontinued RON92 petrol and replaced it with RON95. The government made use of the switch to increase the price of RON95 by 5 cents and jacked the price of RON97 all the way to RM 2.05 per liter, which is 25 cents (13.9%) higher. This was what the Star wrote : Quote:

Update @ Sept. 7 The government continues to lie... Quote:
The new RON95 petrol merely meets the Euro 2 (1996) for passenger cars, which calls for a maximum CO emission of 2.2 g/km. AFAIK, the composition and quantity of petrol additives are proprietary and unique to each producer. There is no such thing as a EURO2 additive, nor is there a standard additive package for all RON95 petrol. As for prices going up because of the hike, well, that remains to be seen. However, we have seen in the past how even hawkers use hikes in petrol prices to justify price increases. These increases never go away, even after petrol prices drop. So I wouldn't consider fears of further price increases baseless and illogical. Of course, we all hope that Datuk Mohd Zain is correct. After all, he seems to know things that we mere mortals are not privy to, like the new EURO2 additive.

And they now have to hike the price because RON97 has been "upgraded" and uses "stronger ingredients"???? IMHO, they should have retained RON92. There are many cars that can use RON92. Even cars like the Honda Civic and CRV only need RON91.

Even my car needs RON95. But what I've really pissed about is, they hike up the price of RON95 to match the previous price of RON97. |

If I'm not mistaken, many Toyota cars can also use RON92. Hyundai cars too. Yeah, Proton must use RON95 or higher. Exactly! They promised that RON95 would be at RM 1.75 but now they hike it up to RM 1.80. Their excuse? Oil prices have gone up. Bullshit. The global oil price is currently around US$ 60 per barrel. Historically, oil was traded around $60-$70 per barrel from the middle of 2005 up till early 2008. Before August 2005, RON97 petrol was sold at RM 1.52. From August 2005 onwards, it went up 10 sen to RM 1.62. Only in March 2006 did it spike up 30 sen to RM 1.92. In other words, if the government intends to maintain the previous level of subsidy, RON97 petrol should be sold at around RM 1.62 to RM 1.92. There's no justification for them to hike it up to RM 2.05, if they are actually retaining the same level of subsidy. If they want to reduce the amount of subsidy, have the balls to admit it. I'm not against reducing the subsidy, I just hate it when they tell all kinds of ridiculous lies just to cover it up. If the government and mainstream media are willing to mislead the public by disseminating false information over such a relatively benign issue (RON rating), imagine what else they could be lying to us about.

For me, the attempt to hide the price hike is one thing. What's also unacceptable is the callous manner in which both the government and the Star attempted to hookwink the public by outright lying about the truth.
