Yes, they can close it up once it's no longer required.

When I went to visit her at noon, they were just wheeling her into the operating theatre. So I waited outside for an hour before they wheeled her back in.

A tracheostomy may be a simple operation but there is always the risk of profuse bleeding if they hit her thyroid (which is a little enlarged) and of course, the risk of damage to the recurrent laryngeal nerves which would ruin her ability to speak since they control the vocal cords.

Luckily, it went well and she opened her eyes a little soon after that, even though she was still under sedation. Phew!

Came back at around 5 pm. She was still under sedation, but she was able to stay awake for amost an hour.

Initially, she was not very responsive. Seemed like she was in a daze. But after some coaxing, we managed to get her to move her arms a bit.

Both arms have a little better power now, but she can only flex them at the moment and her right side is still weaker than the left. It's going to take a while to get them back to normal....

Yes, that's true.. in a way. However, she has a very long way to recover. And she will have undergo at least two more operations in the near future.

Today, she was still not responsive, but they say it's expected. It will take another 3 weeks or so to heal from the brain insult. However, her vitals are good and she's breathing well on her own.

They will be sending her to a high dependency ward soon, and then start her on physiotherapy. In a way, it's a good day. However, her lack of response is quite worrying....

Everyone's doing that, but she's still not responsive. Sigh.. I'm worried. She's physically better now, albeit much thinner, but "she" is just not in there.

I met Dr. Lau, the neuroradiologist who was supposed to "fix" her AVM and aneurysm, early this morning. Very, very nice guy who took the time on a Saturday morning to sit down and go through her scans with me before discussing her treatment options.

Ultimately, Jenny's condition is best treated by embolizing the the AVM and aneurysm. Basically, embolization involves the blocking of the target blood vessels with glue or metal coils.

He is the most experienced neuroradiologist in Malaysia when it comes to fixing AVMs and aneurysms through embolization, but as luck would have it, the man who taught him how to do that, a Dr. Gyula Gal from Sweden, will be coming to Malaysia for a couple of days.

He suggested that we make use of this fortuitous opportunity to have him perform the procedure on Jenny with his assistance. Since Dr. Gyula Gal has 15 years of experience, her chances of a successful embolization in a single sitting would be much greater. There is still a 10% chance of complications, but those are very good odds as far as these conditions go.

Needless to say, we were ecstatic and accepted his very, very kind offer. Dr. Lau will now arrange for her embolization on either Dec. 14 or 15 when Dr. Gal will be free to do it.

The timing is just perfect. They usually aim to do this about six weeks after the "accident". Dec. 14-15 will be about 7 weeks from her accident. Perfect!
