Thumbs up Chinese Girl

I was asked by this friend of mine to take some portraits of her for her application submission to a singing competition. She has no experience in modelling (as much as I am not experience in photography yet) and we were just trying out as many style as possible. Shots were taken mostly with the Nikkkor 50mm f/1.8 and a 3rd party flash. Here are some of the results.

Critics and Comments welcomed...

EDITED: I forgot to mention that these pictures are "play" pictures. The ones to be submitted for the competition has to be a straight forward picture - one face picture and one full body picture. Since she has already put up her makeup, dye her hair and wore such nice clothes, I thought it'd be a waste just to take 2 photos for the competition.

Hmm...I find the poses are a bit weird, especially the 2nd and 4th. The rest are fine though. Maybe you should try to immitating others.

i found out that the pose not natural enough, may be beside posting, u can keep on snapping wat ever she doing at that time...that will be more natural i think and have a better effect for a person that nv do modeling

I feel the darker background (better contrast) will bring more focus on potraits, also lower appeture with better DOF will help (I hope I got it rite).

I think you meant bigger aperture with less DOF.

I think what you meant was my angle of shooting is a bit wierd? She was just practically sitting down there (feeling a little shy at the same time ) You know la... it's not easy taking a photo of your friend. She was so uptight initially that every photo appears like a stick!

I think "Beginners" like us are always trying to imitate others as a learning path. I look at hundreds of photos at Fredmiranda.com trying to see what the pros do while photographing models or models wannabe.

In fact, I asked her to do some pose which I've seen in some other photog forums. It turned out so bad I removed most of them instantly. The photographer and the model too has a role in this. I think it's important for us to get the hang of it rather than trying to immediately generate "pro" results in such a short time. For me, the satisfaction was when she was really happy with the results. All she did was asked me to remove some of her freckles on her skin!!!

Haha... don't worry. She'll only need to submit a face and full body picture for the competition. The rest are only taken for fun. It's a win-win situation. I get to improve my photography skills and she gets to keep a set of edited photos burned in a CDR!!! =D So, if anyone of you in the forum who would like a similiar win-win situation, do let me know ya! Male or Female!
