Comet 17P/Holmes

Trin asked me about Comet pics. I have taken quite a few but have been 2 busy 2 post. Here are a few taken at different times (see coments) with an 600mm APO lens and Canon 300D. First picture was slightly out of focus, but both pics are at same scale.

Taken October 26th near 98% full moon

Taken November 7th with no moon
...now noticable diffuse stuff around a core...

US has holiday this week, however it will be full moon again but I will update soon.

The comet's diameter is now larger than that of the sun...

Wow.. It really looks like a big star.

Yeah, I can see the diffuse stuff very clearly. Why is it so round... instead of teardrop-shaped? I mean, it's travelling at a high speed. That should result in a tail-like dust cloud, right?

I think it is because that where it is at right now in relationship to the earth and sun that its tail would be heading directly away from us/earth, so in the picture it appears to be heading for earth.

But actualy it's in (a safe) orbit around the sun.

Oh, I forgot. The direction of the tail would determined by the position of the sun, right??

If you load up this java program and set it to run. You can see just exactly where the comet is.
