Ever since I bought the Nikon D300, I've always wondered why my flash would go berserk whenever I press the Depth of Field (DoF) preview button. I just discovered that it's because of the Modeling Flash feature in the Nikon D300. Apparently, Modeling Flash triggers a rapid burst of flashes from the Nikon Speedlight flash, so that it acts like a modeling flash. Supposed to be useful for users of multiple flashes, but I can tell you that it's really irritating for users of SINGLE flashes. By default, it's turned on. Sheer stupidity on Nikon's part. After all, how many users of multiple flashes do you know? I'm pretty sure we users of single flashes far outnumber users of multiple flashes. So, if you have been startled by your flash's abnormal flashing whenever you press the DoF Preview button, well, just disable it. You can do so by going to Menu -> Custom Setting Menu (pencil icon) -> e - Bracketing/flash -> e4 - Modeling Flash.
