Reputation: 2948   Rep Power: 38 |  Trifid Nebula M20 - Trifid Nebula, low in the southern sky (at north latitude 34 degrees  ) around midnight in the constellation Sagittarius, just north of the "teapot". I have been reluctant to post any shots as of late, because summer nights are short and I have changed telescopes and had to retrain the mount's drives. At this point, I think I've got the alignment near perfect however, I did not have the mount compensating for the periodic error in the drive so the stars are somewhat elongated in the east-west direction. North is down towards the bottom right. Here is a shrunken JPG...Shot specs: Canon 300d, 1140mm @ f/4.5, ISO 800 for 2hr. 24min exposure. Last edited by Ishtim : 5th Aug 2008 at 09:16 PM. |

 The "trick" is to use an equatorial mount for the telescope (lens) see last graphic near bottom of PAGE. They are really difficult to align, because the axis in which the mount pivots on must be paralell to the earth's polar axis other wise the stars drift. | |
