Default Nikon D40 with D90 kit Lens

I tested my D40 with D90, the shooting is superb.
I got one question, When i change the lens to Manual, it seems like not working. Is it normal?

you do know that standard zoom lens cannot focus objects that are too close right?

your D90 kit lens is 18-105mm VR?
at 105mm your minimum focusing distance is 1.48 feet / 0.45 meter

When you switch to M, the AF will not function. You have to manually focus using one of the ring. Zoom is always done mechanically, so it should work regardless of A/M or M mode, just like your D40 kit lens.

i think for that lens the focus ring is in between the zoom ring and body.

the smaller ring. not in front like your other lens.

There's 2 rings, use the other ring.
