Default DNS Server - make your machine into one

Hi Guys/Gals!
Because I notice DNS servers of ISP's watch your every move, how about converting the very machine you browse with, into a DNS server? Or, can TechARP users get together for an "ad-less, pure" DNS server? Our very own DNS SERVER-that doesn't sell info to others!!
How big is the root server database? How much memory is needed? Will a home connection (broadband) suffice? Has anyone here tried it? Can we have redundancies? Know Techs who have done this?
later dudes!

if you want a secure access to the net, try the TOR network. very secure but slow.

Well, I don't think DNS servers sell your info. Nothing to sell really. But they more or less have to follow the local laws (depending on where they are located) and therefore may have to provide law enforcement with your information when requested. Usually, that requires a warrant.

First off I have not done this (yet)!

I've looked thru the how-to articles on the Ubuntu forums and it doesn't look like that much work to set up a machine running Ubuntu/Xubuntu to be the DNS server for your local LAN machines. I've got some dedicated number crunchers that I converted off of Windoze last winter that look to be good canidates. I've already manged to set two of them up as SAMBA file servers (w/o DNS or domain stuff on) and one of those as an apt-cacher (think of 1 machine that downloads all windows updates and the others just go to it for the files (at 10/100/1000Mbps LAN speeds) instead of downloading them again at sub-1Mbps speeds).
