It was like this when the Xbox 360 came out. LOL! I should have looked at our local Best Buy.

As the video game war pushes to new heights this week with two of the big three console makers releasing their latest versions, entrepreneurs are taking advantage of a seemingly insatiable public demand by reselling the machines online at huge markups.

The big three gaming consoles -- Sony's PlayStation 3, Microsoft's Xbox 360, and Nintendo's Wii -- will duke it out this holiday season for top spot, in what is expected to be the most exciting showdown in gaming history.

But even days before they the new arrivals hit the stores, jittery hardcore gamers weren't taking any chances and began lining up at Best Buy and Wal-Mart stores across the country Wednesday, while anxious retailers were hoping to have enough consoles to meet demand. But as the lines continue to get longer and the first round of consoles get further out of reach for many, the machines have begun popping up online in places like eBay and Craigslist.

Hot Pursuit

Demand seems to be greatest at the moment for Sony's PlayStation 3. That's because demand for the PS3 will likely outstrip supply when the console, priced from $499 to $599, goes on sale at 12:01 a.m. Friday. Sony was only able to ship 400,000 units to the United States.

"When it comes to consoles for a launch there are never enough to go around," said Michael Gartenberg, an analyst with Jupiter Research. "The stuff is going to be in short supply pretty quick."

Sony had initially planned to release the PS3 last spring, but was forced to delay the launch and then cut the number of units that could be ready for this holiday season. The problem was related to technical issues with manufacturing key components for its Blu-ray drive, according to Gartenberg.

Last week, the company released 100,000 PS3s in Japan and sold out in a single day. Sony said it will make about one million of the PS3 game consoles available by the end of this year, with about six million to be shipped worldwide by the end of next year.

Fun and Games Online

Some pre-ordered PS3 consoles began appearing on eBay shortly after Halloween and prices shot straight up into the thousands of dollars range nearly immediately. A simple search today finds PS3s from $2,000 and up. The highest price current asking price on eBay is a 60-gigabyte PS3 model for $3,888.

"There is definitely a console war going on, no doubt," Gartenberg said. "But we'll see if they actually get that much for them on eBay."

Although the online market started out hot for the PS3 game consoles, people shopping for them on eBay may be disappointed. Early risers have been snatching up whatever units are available, and the online auction site has now moved to limit the sales.

Now, only established eBay vendors -- those who have racked up comments from at least 50 previous customers and have positive ratings of at least 98 out of 100 points -- can list PS3s before midnight tonight. And, each vendor can list only one PS3 per eBay account.

The listing must include a photo of the preorder receipt, and the seller must guarantee shipment within 30 days from the date of purchase.

Nintendo Makes Its Move

The PS3 isn't the only gaming platform making waves online. Third-place console maker, Nintendo, is launching its own next-generation platform, called the Wii, this Sunday, November 19. Analysts expect that console, which will cost significantly less than Sony's PlayStation 3 and Microsoft's Xbox 360, to also be a big seller.

As of Thursday afternoon, the Wii could be found on eBay for up to $1,000. That's four times its retail price of $250.

Nintendo is banking on its innovative new controller to differentiate the Wii from the PS 3 and the Xbox 360. Unlike the other consoles, the Wii uses motion sensors in its controller so it can act like a steering wheel, a tennis racket, or even a sword.

"Nintendo has concentrated on a total immersive gaming experience," said Gartenberg. And ultimately, he predicts, "whoever has the best games is going to control the market."

Would you rather sleep out in the open?

Perhaps it's time to line up around here as well. The release is supposed to take place some time in March or so...
