.hack//Root(Anime) is the beginning of the .hack//G.U series (PS2) and the .hack//G.U OVA : The Returner is the anime Episode that concluded the whole story of .hack//G.U. .hack//G.U Trilogy is a short Movie CG version of the whole .hack//G.U. series (Although I kinda unhappy for how they plot the story which totally different from the plot in the PS2 series)

Give it a try and you will get addicted to the story. Older .hack series I've never tried as it doesn't really get my attention but .hack//G.U is very different and it actually got my eye on it.
