Default External Hardisk unreadable

Hi,

I'm using a maxtor hardisk as an USB external hardive for half of year already. This problem just came last night. One of its partitions is showing:

"G:\is not accessible.
The file or directory is corrupted and unreadable."

So, anyone can help me solve this problem?

The 200GB hardisk had been split into 2 partitions. 1 is 150GB and 50GB for the second one. However, the larger partition is now unreadble. The smaller partition still OK to read / wirte.

I can't perform scan disk, defragmentation and even chkdsk on that problem partition.

Any suggestion to recover the data inside?

Please help. Thanks.

I'd suggest the Maxtor website. They have some 'tools' that you could try using first. Then I'd present the problem to the Maxtor support team.

damn, I saw your post a bit late. There's something that you can try using actually. Checkout www.r-studio.com

They've got among the best filesystem/data recovery tools I've seen. Saved me once, needing to recover critical files off a disk with physical errors (and its a Linux partition on the disk too!)

Thanks fyire,
R-studio looks like a piece of good software,

"R-Studio utilities recover files

* Deleted without Recycle Bin, or when Recycle Bin has been emptied;
* Removed by virus attack or power failure;
* After the partition with the files was reformatted, even for different file system;
* When the partition structure on a hard disk was changed or damaged. In this case, R-Studio utilities can scan the hard disk trying to find previously existed partitions and recover files from found partitions.
* From hard disk with bad sectors. R-Studio Data Recovery Software can first copy the entire disk or its part into an image file and then process such image file. This is especially useful when new bad sectors are constantly appearing on the hard disk, and remaining information must be immediately saved."

i think i can make a try on using the software to recover some of the files.

You could try to recover using R-disk like fyire said or if you want a totally freeware based partition recoverer which works on all platforms, use Testdisk http://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/TestDisk . Has worked for me many times when I even corrupted the MBR of a few HDD's before. However works best when the harddrive is connected to the motherboard. Seems USB interfacing is not enough for intensive read/write required for data recovery
