Default incompatible?

i was just wondering.... i installed before a 128-bit, 256mb fx5600 in my ex-girlfriend's pc which was a 1.8Ghz pentium4 with a stick of 512mb ddr400 ram installed....

now apparently, the display would get garbled every now and then...

i was wondering if it was because of the video card?

Faulty card is the first suspect.

hmmmmm..... weird... i tested it before i installed it.....

it's ironic, though, 'coz it's happened to me twice already. my dad just upgraded his computer with a new motherboard that's PCI-E so i tried to use his old AGP radeon 9600 on this temporary rig that i'm using right now.

this is a 1.8Ghz socket A sempron with 256mb ddr400 RAM. first time i tried to use the 9600, it worked fine. but after a few days, it started having problems with windows booting. it would take awhile before it would finally get into windows. a few more days later, it wouldn't even boot windows and at BIOS boot, the screen would be garbled.

driver problem? is it possible that the video card was too fast for the rigs hence the incompatibility?

Remove the card and put it in again.

I recently had an epiphany (or sorts) as to why I didn't work. I was thinking that maybe their motherboard only supported AGP4X? While my graphics card was 8X?

Could that be the reason?

Shouldn't be, AGP 8x and 4x are sort of inter-compatible (is that a word?)

Theoratically, a 8x card should work on a 4x slot because it 'should' be backward compatible. If any compatibility issue arises, the issue would probably be voltage related because AFAIK, 4x slot is 1.5v and 8x slot is 0.8v but the 8x card 'should' be able to withstand the extra 0.7v.

One more possibility is the AGP slot/mobo is not backward compatible. I wonder if updating the BIOS would fix it...

Just my 2 cents...

The slot will detect the card and supply the right voltage.
