Default Installation of SATA NCQ hard drive for WinXP

I've just installed WinXP SP2 on my DFI LanParty Ultra-D. My current hard drive drive doesn't support NCQ so I'm only using the stock MS drivers.

My question is...

I'm going to install a new SATA drive that supports NCQ (a Western Digital WD3200KS). Will I have to reinstall WinXP SP2 to have NCQ support, or do I only need to install the Nvidia IDE drivers at this point?

Welcome to the forums!

When you replace your hard disk with the new drive that supports NCQ, you will need to first install the nVidia drivers before the exchange, and verifly Windows has detected the new drive. Go into the driver properties in Device Manager and ensure that the "Command Que" box is checked.

Also, keep in mind that NCQ is not supported on all chipsets. I was unable to confirm that your motherboard supports NCQ.

ok, that sound logical enough.

Though I know there's not much advantage, if any, of using NCQ for a desktop client, my system sees a fair amount of I/O.

You will only see advantage if you do random access alot. In normal desktop environment, you may even see performance drop.
