Default USB Thumb Drive unknown device

got a problem..i was using my Kingston Data Traveller II Plus (256mb) thumb drive on my work pc the other day. then came along one of my colleague who plugged-in his thumb drive into the PC. at this point i could access his thumb drive with no problem.

after taking his off and plugging mine back in, everything just turned bad. Windows XP detect the thumb drive as an unknown device with no drivers installed. same goes to other thumb drive i try to plug-in.

i've tried looking for XP drivers for my Kingston but they only have win98 drivers available now, which XP won't accept. short of reinstalling my Windows...is there any other solution?

i tried connecting my mobile phone (storage device) and it detects without a hitch. i believe i just need usb window drivers for this problem. anyone can point me to it?

Faulty thumb drive. Try another system, I'm quite sure the thumb drive is that from your post.

This happen at my work place before, your colleague most likely unplug the USB thumbdrive without savely disable it. Chances are ur windows USB driver has screwed up, try pluging other USB device like mouse and see if the port still work. Last time it happen we had to reinstall the OS again, acording to the HP technical support worst case scenario the port might be damaged (guess urs aren't the issue here).

P/S: That's why I now disable the device before removing it.

reinstall?
port works ok, i tried with my mobile phone (set as storage device). there are 6 usb ports. all of them refuse to detect thumb drives. saying no driver installed. other usb devices seem to work thought.

Yeah, that may work...

Or you can always "delete" the USB controller in the Device Manager and have Windows XP re-detect it and re-install the driver.

restarting doesn't work. disabling the device and plugging it back in doesn't work. removing the other usb controllers doesn't work. windows will still detect it as unknown device when i plug any thumb drive in.
