Default Hard Drive Question

My old pc's hard drive is full, So I am buying a new one. I need more space.

This might be a stupid Question, But here it is.

My old mobo (abit KT7AR) only has IDE, spec'ed @ up to ATA/100. If I buy a drive spec'ed higher will it still work in my old system? Dun really care about performance.

Any brand recomendations?, Looking for about 300G or so.

Should be fine connecting a higher spec'd drive to a ATA-100 controller.

If I found the right motherboard KT7A-RAID

Your board only supports drives up to 137GB, to allow drives greater than 137GB you have a few options. You can get a controller that you would plug into an expanstion slot, you would then connect the new harddrive to that card. The second option and least desirable would be use something called a dynamic drive overlay, it's a driver that you install on the drive that allows the computer to support drives 137GB's or greater.

Harddrive manufactures used to include one of the two solutions above in their retail boxes, I'm not sure if they still do that or not.

Ok. Thanks

Man only 137g. I guess it will do.

And thanks again about the 137GB limit. I would have bought a large drive and the thought that it was broken...

How much of a preformance loss would there be with the pci-card option?

Oh, I just thought of another question. If I go with the controller card, Could I use a sata drive instead of ide?

Cache is a bit low. I would prefer an 8mb cache.
