the only way to compare is to have same capacity drives & lots of samples .. lolz..

even my WD 250gb with 16m cache beats my 120b with 8mb cache .. its pretty unfair since 250gb is newer

That depends. Best to check the specifications. Cause some 250GB or even larger hard drives may come with only 8MB of buffer.

What does Raid ready mean?
What is the differences between 8mb buffer and 16mb buffer??
Go for the Samsung SP2504C 250 GB Sata II HDD.It's cheaper & one of the best in 250 GB HDDs according to Tomshardware.com.Believe me, u won't feel regretted. The Samsung HDD boasts 8MB of cache. If u want a 16MB one,u can go 4 the Western Digital WD2500KS with 16MB but this Samsung HDD is better than this WD despite of having 8 MB of Cache.

U can check out this link to know in detail.
http://www23.tomshardware.com/storag...274&chart =41

Go through the entire comparison & u'll find that Samsung HDD is in most of the cases r far superior to the WD & other much higher priced HDDs.It's File Writing performance is identical even with the Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 750 GB.

And for Raid,I'll suggest u to have two same model HDDs in Raid 0.

So have any first hand experience using it?

Nothing beats good old real world testing (which PCMark is NOT - synthetic benchies don't mean much.)

I would really like to try out some of the perpendicular platter drives. They seem to be pretty dandy.

The Hitachi Deskstar T7K250 is a nice hard drive. Higher density platters are always good.

I am using the hitachi one..i think is the one you mention..
From what I read, 16mb cache(Seagate & Hitachi) for 250gb, the price is quite a differ with 8mb cache, while 320gb almost the just a little.
And the technical sheet said that, 250gb 16mb cache for entry level server/workstation, well, it make felt like it for doing big thing.. I rarely to transfering huge file or formating pc oftenly.. So I think is ok to get the 8mb cache first..

Well, I sure understand it after couple month of using it..haha..

By all means, check out the links provided to get more info on RAID (pros/cons etc.) For example, a RAID-0 config will typically generate higher reads and writes over their single HDD breathren in I/O performance. The burst rate should be higher too. The general consensus is more cache is better (8mb buffer v. 16mb) though in real life, it may only boost the synthetic benchmarks. But hey, more is better right?
