Plus, there is always a slight chance that it could bomb out.
I really don't think WD is gonna jeopardise their reputation by supplying sub standard HDDs. Just that the OEM Raptors don't come with 5 year warranty.

He he he, I got the nice 5 year warranty. Registered the drive, and it was enabled. But, in general I am cautious about any new hardware. And when it's mechanical (HDD, DVD-ROM, ect) I am more cautious.
As for WD jepordising themselves, of course not! Not on purpose. But look at Maxtor. They had a bad run, and it was not there plan. Sometimes things just fail, so I like to e prepared for the "just-in-case" scenario. It's been a good month with it, and I hope another 2 months go by without a problem so I can re-size my D: partition and not worry about the deleted one. I have Partition Magic, and haven't done anything to the free aria, so it can be restored if needed.

All HDD manufacturers that I know of have a string of bad runs, including Maxtor, WD, IBM (now Hitachi), Seagate. I do know the first 3 months is one of the highest failing rate.

All I did was write the serial number down, and register it on the WD web site like usual. It popped up saying I got a 5 year warranty from that date. In the description from NewEgg it said it had a 5 year warranty through WD.
