Home Media Streaming System

I am building a brand new gigabit network around my apartment and will like to install new NAS in a separate room to hold all my music, photos and video. I probably will have media extenders in each room with a TV.

I'm inclined to go for having all the data on a NAS instead of having the data on a PC, it means that it’s easier share with different PCs and I don’t need the PC to be on when I want to play some media. Does anyone have different thoughts?

I'd appreciate any advice on the brand and make of any NAS and media streamers/extenders that works well together.
