Default i hate vista

yep. thats right. i'm a new vista owner & i hate it. its hard to find things. you have to acknowledge that yes you want to do something every time you turn around. omg.
my pc is nothing like what i've read most of the posters here have. its a out of the box wally-world build. yeeks.
oh well. i really didn't have a choice. you see, my old beloved xp came down with a case of capacitor disease rather suddenly. i had never heard of it before... well, i'm pretty much an expert on it now. (sob. sob)
but now i'm in the vista world. confused with something that should be so easy to overcome.... but i just cant seem to put my head around it. could be partly this wally-world no frills, proprietorship thing... though maybe i'd run it by some techs here. i'm certain you guys .

i have this old 80g maxtor drive that i had kept all of my data files on...there's no operating sys on this babe. its formatted into 4 partitions. its an ide type. when i broke into my new case i see that oh wow... only sata hookups.
ok no problem (i thought) i'll just get a ide-serial ata converter, toss it in the case & away we go. funny thing is, with it plugged into the motherboard -- i cant vista to boot up. just sits in a loop it appears... bios setup wont even initiate. ok, poop. i thought the drive must be bad... but i can take it to my dead pc, bios recognizes it, seagate passes it on a dos extended test no prob.

so, i got another bright idea. i got a sabrent usb-dsc5 cable job. it says "usa 2.0 cable to serial ata (sata) & ide 1.6, 2.5, 3.5" hard drive & 5.25 cd/dvd-rw drive" usb 2.0 high speed interface --PNP hot swapping -- support usb 2.0 &1.1 (of course) 2a ac power supplu to ensure enough drive power -- supports windows 98se/me/2000/xp/vista & mac OS x.

i really did think it would work... not, seems that vista had to think about it alot when it was locating the device drivers. but, while it was lookin' the drive was listed correctly as a maxtor 6 disk drive. BUT -- buy the time it installed the drivers, it changed the description to "disk drive". it didn't assign a drive # to it. the usb light on the sabrent stayed on but the ide on the sabrent went out.

to the point. i can see the drive in device manager. but if you try to populate the fields in properties... it says that it can't access that information. it has the same drivers installed as every other usb drive &/or hard drive does. partmgr.sys & disk.sys.

you cant see the drive in device management at all. you cant see the device in computer. ahhh... you cant open it, partition it. (not that i want to loose any data, i dont) its useless. any ideas?

The changes made to Vista is similar to Linux/Unix style. Even the first user doesn't have admin rights unless you specifically say so, something like 'root' or 'sudo'.

This is actually a very good feature to prevent stupid mistakes. Even server admins can make silly mistakes.

Open up command prompt by going to Start Menu, type CMD, press Ctrl+Shift+Enter.

A command prompt should open up. Make sure it's written "Administrator...." at the title bar. Then type below...

1) diskpart
2) list vol (this should list all the volumes available in your computer), check which volume that doesn't have any drive letter "Ltr", and check the size whether that could be your drive.
3) select vol 2 (replace 2 with the volume number you suspect to be the drive that you tried to access but cant)
4) assign (this should assign the volume selected with a drive letter)

Now check My Computer and see if you can see the drive.

If you still can't, right-click @ My Computer, choose Manage, then click at Disk Management, check whether your drive is there. if it is, click on it and choose Initialize or something...

Good luck!

Hard to find? The thing about Vista is that it's much easier to search for stuff than in XP. There is even a Search bar right on the Start Menu.

Yes but it's far more integrated in the Vista operating system.

Didn't like Vista before this until I'm using it on my office laptop. Now? I like both!
