Question Not Computer literate - need help

Hi all, i have just purchased a new computer with the nvidia geforce gtx260 graphics card and GA-X48-DS4 MOTHERBOARD, with 4gb of ram.
I have a game u may know of called Supreme Commander, i have all the quality settings set to high. when i play skirmish and there is a lot going on in the game such as lots of units and buildings the whole game slows down, i tried changing the resolution of my computer and overclocking the mother board to no effect. imay have not explained well but i feel like my computer is running as good as it could be. Hi there,

I need the information of the processor, as you didn't give us. From the motherboard, it's a S.775, so it could be a C2D or a C2Q. Supreme Commander is really tough on processors and a very powerful C2D will reduce the slowdowns.

Also, you might need to update the gtx260 drivers.

As you can see from this review Tech ARP - ASUS ENGTX260 TOP GeForce GTX 260 Graphics Card Review , this game is very CPU limited, and since you already have E8400 which is a very fast dual core processor, I don't think there's anything else you can do. Overclocking the CPU may help though.

You need to overclock the CPU, not the graphics card.

overclocking both will help but the cpu overclocking is going to help the most. however if you upgrade to a quad and oc it that would help the most.

I don't so about the quad core, unless the game is utilising it, which is unlikely since Supreme Commander is an old game.

It's definitely a CPU-limitation. You have to try overclocking the CPU. Overclocking the graphics card won't get you anywhere because even a GeForce 8800 GT is enough to run it at 1920 x 1200 with full graphics effects enabled.

k. I'm a SUPREME COMMANDER regular.

perhaps you could let us know your game setting.

are you playing against AIX or AI?

and how many of them?

on what sized map?

and how long into the game before you feel the lag kicks in.

and lastly, have you tried Core Maximizer for Supreme Commander?

anyway I've gamed on Sup Comm on processors far less than yours and memory that's half of yours with no lag issues kicking in until much later in the game. even if so, I would've settled most AI so the lag isn't that much there already.

I've tried 3 vs 1 or few AIX too, lag only kicks in like after 45min - 1 hr or more.

I wouldn't go into the graphic detail part because you said you tried lowering your settings. My best bet is that you're not using the Core Maximizer yet. And also take note of the MAP size / UNIT LIMIT and AI type.

going on huge map with an AIX with huge unit limit and you'll lag pretty much earlier. From what I tested, 1 AIX is like 3 - 4 normal AI.
