Default Microsoft WHS

Since we are at it, let's continue our discussion here.

Personally, I would get a really low power system like one of those Atom, plug in a few TBs of HDD, and run it for 24/7.

I'm actually considering a low end PC for daily usage, or a WHS.

hmmm.
should i build a home server too..
i could get hold of another LGA775 motherboard, spare hard disk, PSU + casing.. i could slap in a $40 celeron and get 2BG of RAM. get some HD from a friend... hmmm.. tempting.. but not worth it

It really really depends on what you'd use it for I guess. For general use an Atom based system would actually really be awesome. I chose mine because I was about to scrap my socket 939 setup. But the DFI mobo has tons of SATA ports so it really was ideal for a WHS setup. Unfortunately, a FX-55 still really is a bit slow to run a PS3 media server (wanted to watch video formats that the PS3 doesnt play natively - ie: .mkv) that would encode video on the fly.

need a quad core for it? or a really fast core 2 duo?
i was testing out on the fly media server for PSP.
P4 3.2ghz wasnt fast enough.
had to rely on my laptop c2d 2ghz. I think it was able to keep up but i think psp's wifi is another bottle neck. hmmmm

It depends whether the encoder supports multithreading or not.

IMO, I would rather get a dedicated Media Center PC rather than a WHS, can a WHS double as a Media Center?

The current Atom processors are definitely frugal when it comes to consuming power. However, the chipsets they are paired with still hog a lot of power. I would wait for the next generation Atom processors which would debut with a proper low-powered chipset.

In the meantime, I think it would be a good idea to reuse old PC hardware. However, it can get a bit expensive to run 24/7!

We have too many PCs already to consider another Media Center. In fact, PS3 is an excellent media center, other than the lack of 'pirated' video format support, mkv files especially.

Well, that's my point, I don't have a PS3.

Initially, I wanted to build a Media Center to hook up to my TV so I can watch downloaded movies.

BUT, thanks to China, for less than RM200, you can get a DVD player with USB support for DIVX LOL.
