I just bought a new IDE HDD today. It is extremely rare now and expensive. 120GB for about RM150. But it's still way cheaper than a new laptop.

Get it first if you need one, because it's getting really rare. I only found 2 shops selling in Lowyat.

is it so rare? But that price not still ok...

Too bad i'm in JB.

Maybe ask my bro see whether he got any spare HDD or not.

I'm currently using the HDAT2 in the Hiren Boot disk, see whether it can fix the HDD (as the description on their website) or not.

Keep showing error message "Selected device is hung - reset required".

Not so positive to me.

Doesn't sound good.

You should start looking for a replacement.

You can always try deleting the partition and repartitioning using FDISK (if that's possible) but if that fails, then it's likely to be a hardware failure.

How about booting from External HDD? I know recent computer can boot from USB devices.

I saw there are only 4 options in the BIOS booting sequence, 1.CD-ROM, 2.HDD, 3. Floppy, 4. Network.

Can we make it by ourself to let it boot from USB?

Yes, you can but it is slower than booting from internal hard disk due to USB bandwidth.

In addition, I am not sure if booting from USB, it will boot as USB 1.1 or 2.0

And I would say again, don't bother fixing the drive anymore if it is going to fail again, it is time to replace it or consider buying a new laptop. Sometimes it is the hardware that is failing and it can't be fixed by software.

ya... just changed a HDD. Got it from other old laptop. 40GB Hitachi 2.5" HDD.

Faced another problem during installation, but it solved last night. After I done a low-level format using Hitachi's tools, I start re-install the WindowsXP. I create a partition during installation with 15GB of space. After finished installation, I can't find the other 25GB spaces. It does not showing the ramaing spaces as the other drive. Usually it will shows an un-partition drive which cannot use until format it in the Windows.

Then, I tried utilise the PartitionMagic in Hiren's boot CD. It shows the un-partition space but I can't apply the changes in PartitionMagic to create a extended logical drive. Finally, I found a HDD boot security option in my BIOS. By uncheck the option, I can now apply the changes in Partition Magic to create Logical drive.

Now my laptop is come back alive. Thanks all for your kind supports.

i don't think you need partition magic for that. i believe you can do it in disk manager in windows.

You have to go to Control Panel -> Administrative Tools -> Computer Management -> Storage.
