I'm considering a new gaming PC setup sometime in May. Then I'll have a spare CPU E4500, ATX Motherboard, 4GB DDR2 RAM, Graphics once I upgrade.

I'm considering to build a 24/7 "mini server", with an ITX motherboard and ITX case. (buy new ITX board and case/psu)

    E4500 2.2Ghz
    4GB DDR2
    Intel ITX motherboard (~$55)
    ITX Case (~$55)
    Slim Heatsink ($~10)

Total, it will cost at least $100. Do you think it is worth it??

Main purpose would be storign files and hosting files.

Can you still find a motherboard for your old E4500?

Definitely worth doing! The only issue is how much storage you are going to "invest" in, since HDDs are quite expensive these days. If you hold off until Q4, then prices could drop significantly.

BTW, to save power, you can actually underclock the CPU and just use Intel Graphics, unless you also want it to double as a media player.

I will be using a 1TB WD Green from my current desktop.

In the future, maybe it will double as a media player, but not so soon.

It should be connected to LAN, of course. WiFi just cannot cut it, even if you use WiFi-N.

Now i need to hunt for a nice case  Already have one in mind.

Apex MI-100 ~$50 2x 3.5" bay, will most likely need to change the heatsink fan.

    Fractal Design Array ~$170, 6x 3.5" bay

Quite hard to find a decent ITX case.
