Where does the extra space come from?

I just noticed that recently that my primary partition has been acting weird. For a while, the space will lessen when I install stuffs... and sometimes it will lessen more for no apparent reason... like 4GB at a time.

Then today I noticed that I gained an extra 5GB for no reason at all.

Did the virtual memory take up that much?

But I only set a maximum of 2.3GB paging file on my primary partition.

This is getting so weird. Last night I had 2GB+ left on my C:. Now, 7GB+...

One thing I remember doing last night was restart my pc. I forgot the last time I restart my pc though.

Any thoughts?

Temp Install files, and Temp internet files.
Some programs leave a lot of junk in the temp folders during install that doesn't go away unless you run disk clean up or restart.

Any programs you were using that u turned off? Editing files in Photoshops, for example, can create scratch files as huge as 4GB in my experience.

I'll bet the bulk of ur 'extra space' came from temp files.

I know ive reccomened this alot, but its a great program. Crap cleaner, Its a freeware cleaner that has a built in registry and crap scanner that will completely remove your system of unused crap and temp files. It also scans the registry similar to registry mechanic for free.

ccleaner.com to get it. It shouldnt require instruction if youy have basic comuter expirience.

Hmm... but most of the time I will off Photoshop/Dreamweaver after I use them.

I just realized this morning, 4GB has disappeared, left only 3GB.

Where is the Temp Install Files folder? C:\WIndows\Temp ?

And the Temp Internet Files at C:\Windows\Downloaded Program Files or C:\WIndows \Offline Web Pages ?

I try searching for large files, no luck.

Will try the ccleaner and see. But I'm very afraid of this kind of software.

I left my torrent client on every night but the download directory is on another partition.

I finally found out where the 4GB went... just now when I reached home, my primary partition only left 4MB.

Then I restart my pc, got back 1GB+.

Later, I noticed a folder on my desktop. Then aha... I remembered I copied some *ahem* files from a DVD onto the primary partition last night coz other partition not enough space, those files are 4GB+ in size.
