I only use DVDs or CDs for long term archival these days, for stuff that I wont be accessing for a long time, and even then, I make sure to use the branded stuff like verbatim (its crazy how short the lifespan of the average optic disk is these days, but amazingly enough, I've still got a Vertatim CDR that I burnt back in 1996 that's still working until today).

For other stuff, I just dump it onto my homemade NAS. Large files such as ISO images of CDs or DVDs goes onto there, and so do my weekly backups (using rsync, to do incremental backups over network).

I guess another option will be to go with tape storage, but that's kinda really overkill for home use lar. Tape devices is one thing that the price had never gone down at all even after all these years...

For me, even a DVD is not enough.

I need a better backup solution...

Correct me if I'm wrong but i think NAS = Network Attached Storage

Basically a storage device that can be accessed via local network by plugging the device to the network. A less funky version would be having a PC with lots of hard disk space sharing a folder to the network.

A dedicated NAS would be nice as it would not require you to run a full blown PC to act as the fileserver. Then again, if you have old machines lying around, what you could do is to attach multiple large harddisks to it and run maybe a Linux-based OS to act as the fileserver. Sort of like a SAN solution

But this topic is getting a lil bit off topic. Haha

Cool

Yeah, back on track again. Adrian, are you or have you ever considered introducing a DVD/CD burning guide and/or forum?
You probably know better than many where an internet site stands in this area.

CDs and DVDs r supposed to have a rather long lifespan (in theory). But that's not always the case. Try doing a search on google for the lifespans of CDs and DVDs, and you'll get very mixed results. It mainly depends on the quality (which determines cost) of the media too. I've seen CDRs that only last a few months b4 dying, but that CDR that I had mentioned in my original post? I had paid AUD9 for it (for a single piece too!) back in 1995, but it still works till today.
