There's a french website called FRAMASOFT who manage to create a package of ready-to-use free and open-sourced Software on a USB key.

here's the french page:

Experience Freedom, wherever you go

The FramaKey is a package of ready-to-use Free Software on a USB key which makes the life of the nomad users much easier.

It aims at offering you the best of the Free Software, i.e. pre-installed, and ready to be used directly from your USB key. Thus, you have nothing to install, the use of the software is safe and does not leave any personal information on the host computer where you ran your FramaKey.
FRAMAKEY's website:
http://www.framakey.org/En/Index

it includes:
-FireFox,
-ThunderBird,
-OpenOffice.org,
-VideoLAN),
-CoolPlayer,
-SciTe

I've tried, it works great.

I hope it fits your expects.

depending on the size of the USB drive, you could try

1. Damn Small Linux
2. Puppy Linux
3. Slax

of course, there should be many others.......... just give it a go. i like Slax.

In a nutshell: Yes.

If you want to run DOS, C++, or 16-bit applications from a USB you can so long as the file system is recognized (FAT, FAT32, and NTFS for very large flash drives 4GB+). Depending on the size of the flash drive you could even install an Operating System. Keep in mind that the read/write access time is going to be MUCH slower then your oldest slowest hard disk.

...but it suppose a booting operating system on USB drive.
If he is looking for just a program or app using a already computer (for ex: Cyber Café or office desktop), then it will be easy and faster to use the Framakey or something

yeah that will then depend on the software.

for example, the older version of Eudora can be copied any place and run. not sure about newer version.
