Back in the EIDE hard disk days this application had a few small advantages. It is also still used on system boards built with the ICH-0 chipset. Anymore, it is not worth the space it takes on the hard drive unless you still run Windows 98.

If you have a P3 or P4, and also have one of the following controllers Intel(R) 82801AA, 82801AB, 82801BA or 82801DB then yes it still is useful. If not then no, it won't do anything for you.

Absolutly correct. However, ICH-0 through ICH-4 generation motherboards are so old that they were back in the Windows 98/2000 era (ICH-9 is the latest greatest, and ICH-7 seems to be the most common these days). Anymore this software is useless (especially on a Windows XP systems).

I'm not so sure "replaced" is the best term to describe this software. The Intel Application Accelerator was used with ICH-0 through ICH-4 chipsets, and when ICH-5 chipsets were released, the Application Accelerator software did not improve the chipset of fix any transfer speed problems with EIDE hard disks.

The Intel Matrix Storage Software was a software based RAID configuration alternative to the Intel RAID BIOS configuration utility (which is usually preferred and much more stable). Unless you run RAID configurations 0/1/5/10 and want to use software RAID building versus BIOS building you won't even want to install this software.

All Intel Chipsets however can benefit from installing the Intel INF Chipset driver installer package.

intel application accelerator is basically just an optimized IDE controller driver set.

Intel didn't release any driver for ICH5. u have to use the windows native IDE controller driver.

as for the matrix storage topic, yeah I guess you are right. "replace" is not the right term here. still, the need to install IMS is entirely dependant on your IDE configuration. IMS is basically just another set of optimized storage controller driver. that why I said the IAA has been replaced by the IMS. if you enabled NCQ (AHCI) without having RAID setup, you would still need to F6-install IMS.
