Default Linux noob, help needed

Hi,

I'm planning to get a new HDD and I planned to install Ubuntu Linux and Windows XP in both partition C and D. As this would be something very new to me, is there any guide?

1) I would make partition C and D: Which one should I install first? Ubuntu or Linux? Install into partition C or D ?

Thanks alot

actually it should be installing LINUX (or whatever non-Windows OS) first, then only Windows.

even if you want to Multiboot Windows, it should be installed in order from the oldest first, latest last.

Hmmm. I think it's the same actually. If you install Windows first, then Linux, you will be using the Linux boot loader to boot up the machine. If otherwise, then Windows's boot loader will boot up the machine on whichever OS you choose.

I've always been installing windows first then linux, as peaz said if you install windows first grub will take over. And i like using grub

karhoe: for now i would install windows first, and once you done with that allocate space for linux when you boot into the linux cd, i think gparted allows you to do that. That is how i do it at least

I think I heard from someone that installing Linux then Windows will caused the Linux boot information to be removed

linux always works better with their own boot loader... some flavours screws up if windows takes over the master boot table, at least last time la

so I'd still advice you to install windows 1st, and during the installation, remember to allocate an unformated space for Linux. The install linux and use up that allocation.

But better still, buy two hard disk. install different OS on different hard disk.

basically you need 2 partitions for linux

partition 1: a swap partition (generally twice the amount of your ram) so if you have 512mb you need to allocate 1024mb
partition 2: where the actual OS will reside, make sure you set it as a /boot so that it can boot into it

Hope that helps

that depends on how the Windows was installed.
