Default "Some updates could not be installed"

Hi folks, I really need help and idea's here!
I have just changed my mobo and it was a bit rough at first as XP reset on every start but I re-installed XP with the option to repair the current installation (i.e. not a proper recovery).
Anyway after re-activating XP everything is singing, well apart from critical updates!

I get the following box when clicking the shield button...

I have contacted MS who have told me to read the FAQ's but I can't find anything but I have posted a reply question on their tech boards but notice there are quite a few q's not answered their so can anyone give me any pointers here please?

Thanks,

Olly.

Hmmm some of the files might be already there and might be causing the update to fail

Hmmm perhaps you should do a fresh install? It's always better that way.

You can probably check see it in Add/Remove Programs list.

If you run the update again, choose to install the Windows Installer 3.1 or alternatively, you can get it here.

The other updates are not listed, so they are most probably already installed.

Hi Dashkin, thanks for the help - I installed the file you pointed too so at least that is off the list but now I have a list the size of everest! I wonder if windows has become a little corrupted and another fresh install is the best idea?

I faced this issue before, but I couldn't remember how I solved it. Glad that you solve it yourself.

To fix, you install MS update (if not already installed) and then remove it. If you have MS update installed, remove it and re-install it. It actually downloads the core files for the update "program"

I had the same problem. Tried everything...this was the only fix that I could find. You can "Run" them one at a time or you can create a text file, save it as WindowsUpdateFix.bat and just run it from your desktop. I hope it works for you!!!!

net stop wuauserv
pause
regsvr32 wuapi.dll
regsvr32 wuweb.dll
regsvr32 atl.dll
regsvr32 wups2.dll
regsvr32 wuaueng1.dll
regsvr32 wups.dll
regsvr32 MSXML3.dll
regsvr32 wucltui.dll
regsvr32 wuaueng.dll
pause
net start wuauserv

Note: If you >Start >Run one at a time. Do not run "Pause". Just skip. Only used for batch file.

kernelcrash, you are a legend!

Worked with the batch file. Tried other methods previous to your fix like deleting the folders/files within the software distribution directory but didn't work. Also reinstall of windows installer doesn't work.

This all came about due to a Windows XP repair.

Now again have a patched Windows XP machine.
