Unhappy Lost e-mail

So Outlook express asks me to compact my e-mail folder, It does this every few weeks, takes about 15-20 minutes. (This is on my older pc.) And I take off for a while.

Come back home and started IE to see whats up and check my mail, And a whole year and a month of my inbox is GONE!

All the sent items, deleated items are still there and up to date. Tried system restore.. no change.

What happened? Anyway to restore?

Oh gosh, that really sucks
I've never used OE before, so I can't help you there. Hopefully someone else will know how

Maybe you could try reading this: The Other E-Mail Threat: File Corruption in Outlook Express

"Ten Steps of Prevention
If you follow the ten stops outlined here, you will greatly reduce the chances that your DBX files will become corrupt.

1.
Disable the e-mail scan in your anti-virus program."

I think what screwed me was that I let it compact, And I forgot avg was set to go off...

Ghaa!

Too tired to think now.

"Wait, you sure the file is corrupted???

The AVG should not corrupt your database. In fact, it should only scan e-mails that are incoming... "

I dunno for sure.

But while the files compact the pc is useless already, then add avg.. (older pc)

Anyway I'm still missing a year of inbox, and the rest is there back to 2000 something.

Hmm.. If the data file did not close properly, Outlook can actually repair it automatically. Not sure how to do that manually though.

I wish I could help you for the present but I use outlook also and if you navigate to tools/accounts and then open the account click on advanced you can have outlook leave the message on the server until you delete it in the delivery section. This always depends on how much mail they will store also. May help in the future though as most servers will let you leave quite a bit on them.

DBxtract looked alright for 7 dollars if everything is important.
