Maybe someone will find this test file useful, but eicar maintains a test file so you can check that a anti virus program is working correctly. All programs should be able to identify this test file and report it being a Eicar-Test-Signature.

The difference between b5 and 95 is CDROM. It's up to you.

I am talking about slow-downs to where it's almost a halt on my system

My system is does not have any anti-spyware. There's no need for one unless you love installing things you are not sure of, especially from the web browser.

Personally, I never needed one. And once in a while I will install and run a scan, never detected any other than some cookies.

As for anti-virus, I'm using Symantec. Not the best, but it works well for me, detecting virus emails.
