Default A couple questions from a newbie.

Hey everyone, as you see this is my first post here. I consider myself to be a newbie when it comes to computers, I believe the term most would use is "green".

Quote:
Machine is an NEC LaVie NX LW23C/5, that has 64MB RAM and had an 8GB HDD With Windows 98.
Problem #1 The machine upon start up kept trying to do a scan disk and stopped at 26% wouldn't move.
I solved this by changing HDD, and OS to 40GB and Windows 2000. (It wouldn't run Linux.)

Problem #2. Since upgrading, I get an error message at startup about, save to disk being disabled, I understand what this problem is, I know the "theory" of how to remedy it, only I cannot. After multiple searches, I found out I should run "diskpart" in command, Only it's not a recognised command, neither is phdisk or fdisk, also what I was to understand as a solution. I tried to run gparted to try build the partition I am supposed to have, for "98"

Problem #3 And this is the odd one. I took a look at the BIOS, though that stuff means absolutely nothing to me, I noticed something.... odd. BIOS seems to think that there is still an 8GB HDD inside it. Though C:\ recognises the 40GB one.

My questions are, is there another way to partition the hdd so that is stop getting the error message, and my machine will shut itself down?
How can I make BIOS recognise the 40GB drive? I thought an update would suffice, however I cannot find an update for my particular model. Actually I found one on a site called WIM's, but they want me to pay to update my BIOS. BIOS Updates are free the last I heard.

I think thats all for now.

Wow.. That's a really old system.

Since it's an NEC machine, you will need to look for the correct BIOS update for your motherboard in the NEC website, or contact them for one.

However, some of the older motherboards cannot support hard drives that are larger than 32GB. A BIOS update may or may not solve that problem.

In BIOS set the HDD to auto-detect, if that option exists. Anyway if you could do some screenshots or at least write the options in BIOS you don't understand I/we can help you.

Been a bit busy due to Christmas season.

BIOS is set to auto-detect and I am to understand that 8GB is the max capacity for that BIOS, but I should still be able to use the entire capacity.

If you have a second PC or access to one, use it to prepartition your 40 GB hard disk drive into 8GB partitions (or smaller).

You mention something about "98". You intend to install Windows 98? If you do, you can partition the hard disk drive before the installation begins.
