Avatar creation help

A little help please. I have a .asf moving file that I can play on windows media etc that I would like to cut out a small portion of the file and create a little loop moving avatar for the forum use. Do I convert first to a .gif file and then try to break it out pic by pic? I have never done this type of converting and the creating the loop etc. A little guidance would be very helpful. playthe file in windws media player like normal...then when u see the picture that u want, just press 'print screen sysrq' to capture it...then paste in photoshop to edit the size 8)

Print screen doesn't work with windows media player I think. I read somewhere you have to do something. Coz if you just print screen, it will appear black-empty.

you need to capture the video using a video editing software.. !!

Yup... like this old software, Decoder Blaster. Pretty cool for playing vcds and mpg files.

Hmmm for .asf files i don't think it goes into the overlays .. SO.. printscreen SHOULD work.

tangoted... basically the idea is for you to capture all the frames that u need for the animated gif individually, then, use a gif creator program to put them together and set the delay and loop settings. voila.

the difficult part would probably be extracting the screenshots and then resizing them to fit.

.asf is a streaming format... well, i don't have any .asf files here to test if a direct screencapture would work or if there's any simple way to do it or not....

its pretty difficult i guess....

you only need a small portion of it ..

the only thing i can think of is a software which actual records a window where you have selected.. like in TechTV .. .. but i dont think its free
