Exclamation I´m needing card for CAD purposes

Hi. I´m looking for a graphic card that could be used with Autodesk Inventor 10 or 11. I have found out that the ATI fireGL cards are certified for CAD use, but they are very expensive.

Are there other cards that work well for CAD applications??

How about the ATI radeon 9800 XT?, does it work?

My pc Has:

pentiun 4, 3.2 Ghz
Bus AGP8x
DDR2
1Gb RAM

Thanks.

Hello Stuff100:

I build systems for your industry all the time. Generally speaking, the requirments for Inventor 11 are pretty low.

Since you are using the AGP bus, there are dozens of video cards that will more then handle the workload. The 9800XT is a great card for the AGP bus, but really even it is near the higher end based on the requirements. Here is AutoDesks info:

Recommended System Requirements
Includes Autodesk Vault client

Part & assembly design (less than 1,000 parts):

Intel® Pentium® 4, Xeon™, or AMD Athlon™, 2GHz or better processor
3.5+ GB free hard drive space (for installation)
1+ GB RAM
128+ MB DirectX or OpenGL Capable graphics card
Large assembly design (more than 1,000 parts):

Intel® Pentium® 4, Xeon™, or AMD Opteron™, 3GHz or better processor
3.5+ GB free hard drive space (for installation)
3+ GB RAM
128+ MB DirectX or OpenGL Capable, Workstation Class graphics card
Supported Operating Systems

Windows® 2000 Professional SP4
Windows® XP Professional SP1, SP2
Windows® XP Professional x64 Edition (1)

EDIT: Consider moving up to 2GB of DDR2 RAM. You will notice a difference.

All cards work.. just that they aren't certified. For basic CAD work, the monitor and the mouse are way more important.

I'm not very familiar with CAD, but do you really need high DPI mouse when a low DPI mouse at low acceleration works as well?

You can always try to mod the cheaper Radeons into FireGLs... -> http://www.rojakpot.com/showarticle.aspx?artno=105

high end cards today does the job pretty well already. unless you are doing real heavy duty CAD stuff like modelling a whole automobile or towers.

More importantly is your monitor, make sure you get at least 1600x1200 reso... otherwise, you'll just see a lot of clutter. and yes, get a good input device too. preferably a nice and large graphic tablet.

Hmmm and more RAM too. You'd definately wish you have more that just 1GB of RAM. go at least 2GB.
