Well, for one thing, try killing Explorer and restarting it. It won't work without a reboot. Microsoft really has to fix that.

Really?

I do it all the time. Never had a problem.

In fact, I just did it while I posted. lol.

Task manager, end process explorer. Clicked on applications tab, click new task, go to windows folder, double click explorer.exe, click ok, boom done.

LOL!! Hardly. Most likely I forgot to patch something. I will need to check.

But without patching... my Vista really isn't as stable as my fully-patched Windows XP. In short, you really need to patch up your operating system no matter what you use.

Of course, as far as gaming is concerned, I don't see a problem playing games on Vista. So, coming back to topic, there should not be an issue migrating to Vista just for games. In fact, if you want to play DX10 games, it's an inevitable upgrade.

To be honest with you,

Your not getting a HUGE increase. The current 8800 series hasn't FULLY nailed down DX10, the performance loss between DX10 and DX9 is just too big; wait until the 2nd generation DX10 cards with better optimization and you'll be better off. Your X1950XTX is a POWERFUL card, its about the same as the 8800GTS 320MB, if I was you:

I'd wait until the next major release of G series, perhaps the 9800?

9800XT and Pro's all over again! 2003 here we re-come!

OK so heres the story. The x1950xtx CF card died 2 weeks ago, so I said "meh".... Hooked up single sapphire x1950xtx and ran my games. Was able to OC the single card more easily than when i was in Crossfire. i was pumping out 734 mhz from the core (stock 648) and was still working on OC'ing the mem when the card decided to push up daises(sp?). Long story short: bought two 400 GB seagate drives and set them up in raid. so i guess when i pulled the cards out to clean the army of dust bunnies from the case i must have shorted sumthing out, cause both cards would not post.

Sent the CF card in for repair (lucky me it was under warranty still). Dropped it off at ati, on a Tuesday, got it back Saturday. I must say i was surprised at the the speed of the turn around time, especially at this time of year. Only prob. is Ati didn't way what was wrong with the card or what they did, just sent the card back, as far as i can tell they replaced the cooler on it. Still waiting on word of whats going on with the Sapphire card. Can't say much good about their customer service.

Anyways, so while i was waiting for the cards, i caved and bought the 8800gt (xfx alpha dog edition)(it was on sale for almost half price). Slapped it in started playing (after reinstalling windows.....). Personally I would recommend upgrading to 8800gt from a x1950xtx probably getting a max. of 10-15 fps more on Crysis. And that's on Medium detail. High detail u can forget about playing Crysis. With the two x1950xtx i was able play on high detail with pretty decent FPS. Mind you that they were OC too.

So conclusion:

8800GT is a great card for the price. decent performance, runs pretty cool compared to my ati cards. A few nice features that you'd expect from a new video card.

X1950XTX if u have one keep the bastard and OC it. Theres no need to upgrade unless u really, really really REALLY want to get a new card or want DX10(so far i have no reason to switch to vista)

gonna wait for my sapphire card to come back and sell the 8800GT. Just wasn't worth it.

just so u guys know

Yup, 8800GT is definitely not good enough for Crysis, that's why you need 8800GTS and overclock it!
