Default Totally confussed with video cards

How do you determine which video card to choose? With all the different ones on the market I can't figure out which is best for what I want to do. I'm not trying to take on the world just play online video games where, when I'm moving my mouse around the screen it doesn't pause to catch up up with itself.
I have an HP Pavilion Intel Core 2 CPU 6300,@1.86 GHz, 1.87 GHz, 1.99 GB Ram system. The video card sticks. Replaced it with an ATI, but it fried last week in less than a year. Was thinking about a 512 PCI Express at 256 or 128. Don't want the ones that overheat, which I've seen in reviews.
Any help in this matter would be appreciated.

Hmm what's your budget for a new video card?

And what games? Since you mentioned online games, can I assume WoW? It could help with your choice if you could list a few games that you want to play without any lagging here as well

CHeers.

Hmm.. When you said that the mouse "doesn't pause to catch up with itself", are you referring to ghosting of the mouse cursor where the mouse cursor appears to have a ghostly trail as it moves on the screen?

If that's what you are talking about, then your problem lies with the monitor.

I wasn't sure on the exact issues either so I kept quiet. But after reading Adrian's post about the monitor and the fact you have fried a video card already in less than a year I thought I would post. I would suggest addressing or determining if the monitor is defective before plugging it into a new viddy card ....
