The cooler works in the same manner (just like in the 8800 GTX). Only the heatsink is of a slightly different shape, and the housing is bigger. The cooler of the GeForce 8800 Ultra is very similar to that of the 8800 GTX. It looks very similar to the 8800 GTX cooler, and the only major external difference is that it has a slightly different shape and the cooler's housing is larger. The core and memory chips, as well as the NV IO along with some power supply elements, are all covered by the heatsinks's base. A copper plate is located at the part of the heatsink base where it is in contact with the GPU. The heatsink comes with some other cooling elements, and has thermal gaskets made of cloth. As the turbine is lifted above the PCB, the heatsink gets a little bigger. We don't completely understand why this is done. A regular cooler for the 8800 GTX, in our opinion, is more than enough to cool this card. The main drawback of this cooler is its huge housing that covers the entire card, including its tail. This is somewhat of a surprise considering that the card itself is very long. This means that the tail will run right into SATA ports if they are located across the PCI-E x16 slots. Unfortunately, this is a layout that is used in most motherboards. Usually, the tail would simple be a thin piece of PCB that could rest between the SATA ports. However, now that there is large plastic housing that covers the tail too, the card won't fit be able to fit between the SATA ports or for that matter, any other ports. You'll either have to use SATA cables with their wires rotated 90°, or you should choose between this video card and your motherboard. Motherboards with the nForce 680 take this issue into account, and their SATA ports have been relocated to a new location and do not interfere with long and thick graphics cards. Most users, in our experience, have cards with older chipset versions. The ASUS box is traditionally quite large and thus has a handle in S.T.A.L.K.E.R. style. The card is thoroughly packed in foamed polyurethane; the other bundled components, however, may dangle inside the box. It doesn't matter, though, because the card itself is secured in place. |
