I don't recommend both I'm never a fan of SLI/CF.

If you have to choose one of them, 8800GT SLI for better performance, but you'll need a nvidia chipset based mainboard. HD3870 X2 if you don't have SLI capable mainboard.

I just asked gen rage to put this post here for know your opinion guys well i will go more far with my config...

CPU: AMD Athlon X2 6000+

GPU X1900 GT v2
SC : SB X-FI Xtreme Music

PSU : Antec Earth Watts 500 W

I prefer to opt for the 8800 sli kit because i have an clearance issue with my chipset cooler.... if i buy the 3870x2... i will be not able to put it into the first slot ... but the second... i never tryed to put an viddy on the second slot...

Ya you mentioned the chipset cooler issue to me Bro and your board is SLI as well. Not sure on the second slot I know on my X38 mobo you can set PEG1 or PEG2 as the default display but yours not really sure

The 3870X2 is more bang for the buck if you don't have a mobo supporting SLI. If you do, the 8800GT will likely offer a better performance, but might be a bit of a headache (and a slight diasspointment) to work with.

that's the fun thing about the 3870X2, it's CF but on single card!

but anyway, the thing is if the game doesn't scale well with CF - then the 3870x2 performs just like the 3870........essentially a 9600GT / 8800GT speed.

take for example Frontlines : Fuel of War - I tested this game on 9600GT. so i thought ok go 3870X2 and get better framerates....... i ended up with similar framerate. the game didn't scale well.

on the other hand, games like Crysis - wow the 3870X2 indeed was WAY faster than 8800GT (single) and 8800GTS G92 (single).

So yeah, how far it goes really depends on how the game scales with CF. on games like Lost Planet, it ran faster when I disable Multi-GPU option.

Are you sure Crysis is that much faster? New drivers?

Well that's back then....... forgot to mention, 1680x1050 HIGH on everything (no AA i think, 2x AA at most) on DX9.

I haven't tested it with recent drivers. Last I tested it was like Feb or so, that time I had the 8800GTS G92 and 3870X2.

I ran FRAPS to check on what I felt too - on the same setting the 3870X2 was like around above 40fps on average while the 8800GTS G92 was hovers around 30ish.

Oh, DirectX 9. You should try testing on DX10.

In DX10, even GTS is faster than X2.
