GPU ViVo vs. Adaptec ?

I've recently been given the task of converting my family's DV and VHS tape collection (unedited-weddings and holidays...600 hours worth...yes, large extended family!). In the past I've used an Adaptec AVC-2310 video capture device, but results have been varied to say the least- in part due to the limited (and problematical) software bundle it came with (Sonic MyDVD,ArcSoft Showbiz).
My question is : Is there a reasonable GPU with ViVo function on the market which could achieve MPEG-2 capture better (and preferably faster) than my present USB device?
I presently run a Palit 7600GS Sonic which I was looking at upgrading in any case- preferably to 8800GT/GTS/GTX/9800GTX level of performance - my budget would be limited to approx $NZ600 which would encompass all but but OC 9800.
And no, I've never owned an ATI card.

Well... i did this alot of times... normaly every videocards have an good quality of capture...(if you have propers drivers)

Here to ways to do it

(and here it worked)

I have an usb tv module who have inputs... i tryed and the quality was so - so ... so i opted with my videocard... who was really better (if you have the propers drivers) if not the quality sucks

Hmm.. AFAIK, the video capture speed is always real-time, meaning it takes 60 seconds for you to capture 60 seconds of footage.

I should have explained myself better. My problem lies with with software bundle I have to use with the Adaptec. In capturing the raw video I seem to be limited to using Sonic MyDVD 5.2 - I've tried using other capture software (Premiere Pro, InterVideo products) and have had (seemingly) driver issues (non-recognition of hardware/capturing terminated by software before completion). The faster part of the equation stems from the time it takes Sonic MyDVD to build the resultant MPEG-2 file- 35-40 minutes is "normal" - whether it be 1Gb or 5Gb- and that's assuming the process is completed, which is in the order of 75%. No fun if you've just spent two hours downloading someones anniversary from VHS. I'm not a Sonic MyDVD fan as you can guess.

My system is fairly antiquated : Gigabyte 865PE/2Gb DDR-400/3.2 P4 Northwood/7600GS...but if GPU video capture is not constrained by a particular software application and offers comparable quality then out it goes in favour of the right GPU/C2D/Mobo that can best meet my needs- I'm gonna go out on a limb here and say my DDR-400 (if not the cpu) is going to bottleneck any performance upgrade I try to achieve with a new graphics card.

Yeah, that's true. You will need to get better software if you want better encoding. Have you tried the newer versions of Premiere Pro?

Actually, it doesn't matter whether you have a graphics card or onboard GPU. The video feed is directly encoded by the CPU, not the GPU.
