haha sometimes timenet or jaring would have war with tmnet... I know last time I went into timenet's cs server... know watz the ping ? hahhaa... 200 - 400... for a local server... arghh...

I think the RM 60 package is no longer available. For home users, it's either RM 88 for just the connection or RM 111 for the connection and modem rental.

Like Peaz said, the ping time depends on where the server is. If it's in Malaysia, you should get relatively good ping times. If it's overseas... very unlikely to see anything less than 500 ms. There's really nothing you can do about that. No tweaks to lower the latency because it's all due to TMNet's limited overseas bandwidth.

Your inability to reconnect after a disconnect is something EVERY Streamyx user has encountered. Yours truly is a veteran with 3 such "incidents". And in all three cases, it's all due to a problem on their end.

Nothing to do with the modem or my system. After numerous dialing to their help line, the verdict usually comes as a faulty port or line down or server down... something like that. And if it's after 4pm, you can expect them to rectify the fault the next day.

And if it's a Saturday... guess when... MONDAY!

I also found another reason why tweaking your connection to the internet is useful ........ read here:

"RasPPPoE either solved or mitigated every problem we'd been living with grudgingly since we first started indulging our foolish broadband dreams to Verizon's considerable profit and our everlasting disappointment. We immediately noticed that Web pages loaded faster, while download rates increased dramatically.

We then eliminated the maddening hang-time problem by taking Schlabbach's advice and assigning ourselves a static IP (instructions in the RasPPPoE readme file). This step prevents Windows from halting the network adapter periodically to acquire an IP, a routine which also causes Windows to take much longer than normal to boot. We had grown sick of both phenomena."

"Many DSL providers discourage their subscribers from having a permanent IP because that makes it difficult for them to balance network loads, and easy for subscribers to run FTP servers off their own boxes. Thus in the name of provider convenience, subscribers are forced to endure grossly sub-standard service without apology."

"The end result for us is a broadband connection which for the first time behaves like a broadband connection. It isn't perfect -- it does slow down when Verizon's pipes are most in demand, and it certainly can't overcome deficiencies in the servers one contacts or the frequent outages in Verizon's user-authentication service; but it works pretty reliably now, and it's pretty fast."

The full article is here:

Now try just imagining putting that into context with our situation with Malaysia TmNet StreamYx Adsl.

It's a bit out dated but it does tell you why choosing one of these pppoe's is important i'm still reasearching whats the most effective at the moment ^^

Yeah setting a static ip will be A LOT OF HELP!

tweaking your internet connection settings does make a difference.

Ok heres a guide about tweaking your PPPoe. Here some small previews:

"If you are using PPPoE [Point-to-Point Protocol connection through an Ethernet network adapter] you have a special circumstance which may require some experimentaiton. You can cofirm with your ISP if yours is a PPPoE connection, but generally this applies to broadband connections like DSL or cable where you must logon with a password (unlike "always on" broadband connections)."

" PPPoE is a method for establishing Point-to-Point Protocol (PPP) connections through Ethernet network adapters. PPPoE requires that, on all client computers, you lower the setting for maximum transmission unit (MTU) size to a value no higher than 1,492. (The default is 1,500.) In some cases, a value lower than 1,492 may be necessary.

1. To identify the correct MTU size, follow these steps: Start a command prompt, and then determine the default gateway of the ICS server by running the Ipconfig utility.
2. At a command prompt on a client, type the following, and then press ENTER:
ping -f -l MTU_size default_gateway_IP_address
Start with an MTU size of 1,454.
3. If an error message indicates that the message must be fragmented, decrease the MTU size, and then run the command again. Repeat this process until the ping command succeeds."

ouch. Hei i recommend you use "The All Seeing Eye".

I use that when i want to play counter strike in malaysia. It finds a list of cs servers in countries i select. I set it to look for singapore and malaysian servers.

It helps find the lowest ping aka fastest server for you to plat at. The web site to download it from is here:

http://www.udpsoft.com

Oh it's a game browser, just like game spy. The difference is, that it is way better.

Oh is it? I thought they cancelled it.

But frankly, the RM 60 package is not worth it...

PPPoE? Streamyx is a PPPoE connection.

I don't think you can get a static IP. But if you can, please let us know!

Hmm... According to John Navas, "The only Windows 95/98/Me/NT/2000/XP network setting that has any real effect on DSL or Cable Modem speed is the TCP Receive Window size, which can be controlled with the following Registry settings."

Regarding latency - "High latency is usually caused by Internet routing and/or congestion issues. There's usually not much you can do about such issues other than complaining or even switching service providers."

You are right about that the MTU should be less than 1500 when on a PPPoE connection - "If you have DSL service using PPPoE, then your MTU may need to be set to a value in the range of 1400-1492.".

But note that - "It is not necessary to make the TCP Receive Window size an exact multiple of MTU or MSS (or any other value) to avoid performance degradation due to packet fragmentation, as is commonly claimed. That is just another urban myth.".

Oh yeah, about the computer hanging on startup due to "dynamic IP", that's due to DHCP time-out. The fix is to set a private IP address (i.e. 192.168.0.1, with a Subnet Mask of 255.255.255.0). But that won't give you a static IP.
