Default My goodness...

Aaargh, this is the time I'm starting to do my Ad-Hoc wireless.

The first thing is all of the settings are very haywire.

No two computers can even do a successful pinging. Nothing happens actually. But the adapters can see each other (they both can detect the area which I set it a name - HOME - but they couldn't ping at all)

Setting up ICS is even worse. I make the whole settings to be jumbled up.

First thing first - I need a secured wireless to be set up and can do a simple filesharing and a sucessful ping.

Btw I have two Prolink WUB1500 USB wireless network adapters, one to Comp1 and another to Comp2.

Please advise how to make them communicate without giving me headaches.

Try the Windows Network Wizard.

Using a wireless router?

What are the IP for both PCs?

Oh. It's an ad-hoc connection.

Unfortunately I don't know whether should I let Windows do the wireless for me or letting the application of the wireless thing manage the whole Wireless LAN (there's a software for this Wireless NIC right?)

I put SSID as HOME and all the stuff inside. But the network kept on using the Automatic Private Address ... and I couldn't make them to communicate at all.

Err.. Why do you want to do an Ad Hoc connection???

Better set it up as an Infrastructure connection.

Now I can make them to ping each other, by using the ICS wizard.

But the client couldn't connect to the Net at all. When the client entered the dial-up section, all it says is "Connecting to WAN MINIPORT" .... and suddenly said "Remote computer's not responding"...

And fixing it will make my connection even worse - now the client couldn't even enter 192.168.0.1 or mshome.net.

How to make them to share together? I get all my headaches today fixing it all day long. aaaaragh!!

Maybe because he doesn't want to use cables and no money to buy a wifi router.

I guess you've come across this page as well? http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/u...02april08.mspx

Hmm...

No idea how to set ad hoc but have you tried with static IP and use the host pc IP as the gateway for the 2nd pc? Just a thought though...

Yes. I tried all that already. But nothing happens.

The client couldn't even access to the net at all. Either something has blocked its access or something else happened. I know it couldn't be the firewall - I set it to allow the client to access the net.

I don't know what has happened - I even tried using the ICS wizard but still the client refused to do anything about connecting to the net.

I had a very similar experience. 2 systems on XP SP2 and one on W98SE. "Main" connected with ethernet cable to the router, "Music" with a wireless PCI card were the 2 XP systems; all 3 could ping one another OK.
But I couldn't get filesharing to work, nor Second Copy 2000 to mutually back up. In the end it was a firewall issue I think (I use ZoneAlarm Pro on one and and freeon the other). I entered the relevant IP addresses (192.168.1.x) into the Firewall/Zones tab of ZA on each system.
However, having finally got it working , for some reason it failed again and I had to re-enter those IP addresses, whereupon Shared Folders revealed themselves again in Windows Explorer/My Network Places/Entire Network/MS Windows Network/Home. ZA seems to change randomly and unexplained those settings you carefully set up.
Sorry I can't be more clear, but I'm not an expert, and don't make careful notes of all settings I make and default configurations, and don't have time to be really fluent at all this stuff, but I understand your
With my very limited experience, it does sound like a firewall issue, so keep fiddling
I was pleased to see one of my boys and a friend playing CounterStrike on the wireless LAN the other day, so I got something right
Hope that might help.
