Nope, can't even afford a new telephone cable let alone new hardware configurations but the problem still persist after I flashed the router with the latest reported stable firmware.

did u guys make a call to TM about this slow down problem u guys facing ? yeah .. i dont think they can limit bt . unless they limit your download speed as overrall. But i guess by doing this customers will complaint them like hell. At least for me i will call them everyday to make the complaint.

ps: i found this humm.. will that be related to the slow down?

In any case, I can only confirm that yeah, super slow BT downloads over here too.

Not sure if they're really limiting the standard BT port(s), but I do find that after changing the port numbers to some random number, the transfer rates does improve a lot.

Also, traffic shaping by port number is the easiest to do, stuff like max transfer rate for certain ports, or traffic priority for certain ports and so on (but that also assumes that ppl have got their services running on default ports lar)

Actually, its not that packet filtering is hard to implement, just that its got limitations lar. Take for example the following usual config:
- SSH - Port 22 (high priority)
- HTTP - Port 80 (low priority)

Something like the above is rather common, as for ssh sessions, it'll be impossible to work on anything if there's a 5 second delay for each keypress before the character appear on screen. However, it probly wont make much difference if u're to wait an extra 5 seconds to download a 1mb file.

Now, traffic shaping by port number is the most standard way of managing bandwidth, but that's assuming everybody runs the services on the default ports.

The kinda blanket filtering that you had mentioned before requires additional filtering work to be done higher up in the network levels. The need to actually examine each packet that passes through the router or bridge to determine what kinda traffic it is (and that's assuming that such a filtering system has a big enough database to identify all the many different protocols that we've got floating around these days). Not to mention, also requiring frequent updates in the event of any protocol changes for any services (not likely if u're talking about HTTP, but as we all know, can be rather frequent indeed for something like ICQ).

Also, such a blank filter will also place quite a bit of strain on whatever CPUs that the router/bridge is running, due to the need to look inside every single packet that goes through it, rather than determining what to do by source/destination port number (far faster)

Well, don't think they will block ports coz companies nowadays are using all kinds of ports, that will only invite more complaints. But the thing is, at the moment, most people only complain about BT. That's interesting coz I'm wondering, how are they filtering it. Whatever kind of filtering they are using, they must have done their homework.

MY BT is not running at all now.

I don't think it's because of that. That only affects a very small area.

Hmm...it isn't uncommon for things to somethings get borked at the exchange or somewhere along the line and degrade your signal. If I were you I'd try to isolate the problem - what speed is your modem syncing at? If it's syncing correctly, do pages served by a TM webserver also load slowly? Do pages in Malaysia load slowly as well? Do you have any static or intereference when you use the phone line for voice?
