Question IP problem

Pop Quiz...

My Dell XPS using Broad Netlink Dev_ID 1713 NIC. Latest driver.

Problem: at company network when plug in the Ethernet, dynamic IP would be assigned. When get IP, the XP hangs, which requires Hard power off. Noted IP assigned was funny and gateway is the same as IP address.

Work-around: Have a fix IP or fresh install of XP.

Question: Why Dynamic IP causes the XP to hang?

It shouldn't. I've used dynamic IP in XP without a problem.

But it looks like you are getting a bad IP address. Anyone having the problem as well, or just you?

BTW, when it hangs, how long did you let it hang before you power off?

I don't think is XP problem. I think is just this network card compatible with the company switch/router. This is the 2nd time it happened since I use this laptop.

hmm.. it hangs for quite sometime, no activity, no mouse movement, ctrl-alt-del no effect and no blue screen. Everything just freeze, that why is odd problem. Only my laptop is facing this.

I think my home network should be fine but haven't try it since I am on wireless at home all the time.

Try this - go to the driver properties for the network card and force it to use a mode, instead of auto-negotiation. I usually force it to use the 100 Mbps or 1000 Mbps mode whenever there's a problem with the card / network.

I think it might be this and something else as I see from system event ..

"Windows cannot create registry key Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies \ActiveDesktop. (Access is denied. )."

"Windows cannot access the registry policy file, \\my.asia.xxx.com\SysVol\my.asia.xxx.com\Policies\ {82057728-42F7-4CD7-BD3E-BE869FA5A6AC}\User\registry.pol. (Access is denied. )."

I did play around (hack) into the registry to change authorization of reg of some company login autoscripting to disable stuff like screensaver, wallpaper. I am not sure why suddenly this triggered and why on dynamic IP. I'll check again when I am in company network.

Edit: Nope. That was not the cause of problem. No event recorded prior to freezing ..

Hi there,

1. Have you tried other routers? Will it cause the same issue? If you are able to get DHCP when you connect to other routers, it is most unlikely your NIC or driver is causing issue.
2. Try connecting to the network using the WLAN (if possible) and see if it can assign an IP address.
3. Is the DHCP service on the router or another server (Windows, Linux)?
4. Does your XPS have 2 NIC ports? You might want to disable one of the NIC ports.
5. When you mentioned you are getting the same IP as the gateway IP, how did you check that if the notebook hangs? Go to cmd and type ipconfig /renew
6. Try to configure the router to assign a specific IP address to your MAC address of your NIC and see if it works or not.

Thank you.

Thanks but not much help since I got no access to router.

1) I am not system Admin of my office network, in MNC is impossible to get access to the server room.

2) No wireless LAN available to prevent unauthorized access

3)Not sure what is on the other side, no access

4)XPS is one LAN port

5) When the notebook hangs, nothing function, can't even move mouse and ctl-alt-del

6)No access to router. We set fix IP at the my end.

Only happens in company network. Works fine in home network.

Maybe you need to talk to the network team to resolve this.
