Default The Importance Of Sleep

Hehe.. Got this in my mailbox. Take it with a pinch of salt.

Quote:
The Importance Of Sleep

A man can go two weeks without eating. But if he doesn’t rest at all, he can only survive for one week. Sleeping provides us the time to rest our internal organs, eyes and brains. Poor sleep quality can cause internal damage to our internal organs and brains. Therefore, sleeping is very important to us. If you wish to have a long life and stay healthy, please take note of the advice below.

5 DON’TS when you are sleeping

DON’T SLEEP WITH WATCH
Watches can emit a certain level of radioactivity. Though small, but if you wear your watch to bed for a long time, it might have adverse effects on your health.

DON’T SLEEP WITH BRA
Scientists in America have discovered those that wear bras for more than 12 hours have a higher risk of getting breast cancer. So go to bed without it.

DON’T SLEEP WITH PHONE
Putting the phone beside your bed or anywhere near you is not encouraged.
Though some of us will use phones as alarm clocks, but please put the phone as far as possible. Scientists have proved that electrical items including mobile phone and television sets emit magnetic waves when used. These waves can cause disruptions to our nervous system. Therefore if you need to put your mobile phone near you, switch it off first.

DON’T SLEEP WITH MAKE UP
People who sleep with make up might have skin problems in the long run.
Sleeping with make up will cause the skin to have difficulty in breathing and problem in perspiring. You will also need a much longer time to go into deep sleep.

DON’T SLEEP WITH OTHERS’ WIFE
You may never wake up again.
Now, I'm quite wary about the factual authenticity of the first Don't. Watches emit radiation? Heck, everything around us emit radiation.

Second Don't - yeah, I read about that. So, I think it's true. Down with the bras!

Third Don't - doubtful. Nothing has been proven conclusively one way or another.

Fourth Don't - seriously doubtful. Make up causing your skin to become "breatheless"?? And make up makes you take a longer time to get into deep sleep??

Fifth Don't - Hahaha... This is the clincher. I have no comments on this. Perhaps someone with some experience in this area can tell us if it's true????

The last one is definitely true. The husband might show up and the next thing you know, you've grown wings and playing a harp (or grown horns and holding a pitchfork)!

Actually, the little spots of "green" paint that glows in the dark on some analog watches and bedside clocks is a radioactive paint containing the element "radium". It is an alpha particle emitter and actually quite harmless as long as it remains inside the watch. Dangers from the luminescent paint stem from when they used to be hand painted by people and had direct contact.

Oh really? It's radium? I always thought it was something else... Tritium??

From http://www.alarmclockdoc.com/FAQ.htm :

Quote:
A little known fact is that the old luminous paint was mildly radioactive--actually, a form of radioactive cobalt and/or radium, mixed with phosphorescent paint. Everyone is familiar with the concept of phosphorescents, as they are used to coat the inside of TV picture tubes. When electrons strike the material, it glows. It is similar with luminous paint. Of course, it has been a long time since radium was used in luminous clock dials. The newer material is an acrylic material consisting of a long-persistence phosphorescent material, sensitive to photons (light).

In the old days workers who would use their mouths to point up the brushes to paint luminous material on aviation indicators and clocks ended up with tongue, throat, and lip cancer. We are not aware of any recorded health hazard with these dials installed on the clock in normal use. Remember, however, that the half life on the old radium paint is in the many hundreds of years. It is advisable to avoid scraping it off the hands and touching it. The phosphorescent material dies off, but the radium remains alive and well for a long time.
But check this out - http://www.roger-russell.com/jeffers/radiumdials.htm :

Quote:
Today, a new material is used in wristwatches, aircraft instruments, etc. This is a radioactive isotope of hydrogen called tritium. It originally had been used to increase the yield of atomic weapons. Tritium is a gas and has a half-life of 12.43 years. It decays into a stable non-radioactive form. In commercial use, the gas is put in tiny vials of borosilicate glass that is internally coated with phosphor and sealed by a laser. These assemblies are referred to as radio-luminescent light sources, also known as Gaslights or Trasers. The vials can be made so small that they can be placed on the watch hands and at each hour on the dial.

Unlike radium paint, tritium gas emits only low energy beta particles (electrons) that are unable to penetrate the borosilicate glass vials. This makes their use completely safe. The non-radioactive phosphors used today must be exposed to light or to some other energy source. Trasers glow constantly by themselves, even in total darkness and require no energy source other than the radioactive gas. Trasers are commonly made with green and yellow phosphors that can most easily seen. Other colors include orange, red and blue. Other uses are emergency exit signs.
