TOKYO (AP)--A strong quake with preliminary magnitude of 6.6 jolted northwestern Japan on Monday morning and a tsunami warning was issued, officials said.

Waves as high as 50 centimeters were believed to have hit the coasts of northwestern prefecture (state) of Niigata, the Meteorological Agency said in a statement.

The quake was centered off the coast of Niigata, the agency said.

Hmm.. I think that's a typo both ways? 50 cm is less than what most waves are. If I'm not mistaken, our East Coast gets 3-4m waves in bad weather and that's normal. So, it's likely to be 5m. 50m sounds farfetched.
