U.S., Russian, Malaysian heading for space station - CNN.com

"The $25 million agreement for a Malaysian astronaut to fly to space was negotiated in 2003 along with a $900 million deal for Malaysia to buy 18 Russian fighter jets."

Errrm,,, Russian jets...

Why not buy american made fighters??? Surely, they must be better overall.

Keep Malaysia safer...

what do you think?
Sure, I'm sure 25 million USD spent on ambition is better then say, better schools, or better welfare, or scholarships for the ones who aspire to do something, or better facilities for the needy (like say orphans). Right on!

Plus for those new kids who had ambition when the finally get old enough to understand why this is so retarded, they will realize that they've been had.

But yea, 25 million USD is a bargain for that right? Especially when the country needs every penny for other things (apart from official's coffers that is).

If they wanted REAL ambition, then spend that 25 million on DEVELOPING and actual space agency INSTEAD of making a 'space tourism' agency. Make your own shit. 25 Million may not be enough, but it would put them WELL on their way to at least developing or 'pretending' that they're developing something.

Quote:
According to The Star, Dr Sheikh Muszaphar is our astronaut. According to Malaysiakini, he's a part-time model AND astronaut.
According to NASA however, he's neither Astronaut, nor Cosmonaut (ie. Russki)... but get this... he's a "Spaceflight Participant". In NASA-speak... that basically means baggage. The kind a space crew needs as much as you'd need a pair of testicles growing out of your forehead.

The Expedition 16 crew members pose for a portrait at the Johnson Space Center. From the left (front row) are Russia's Federal Space Agency cosmonaut Yuri Malenchenko, flight engineer and Soyuz commander; astronaut Peggy Whitson, commander; and Malaysian spaceflight participant Sheikh Muzhaphar Shukor. From the left (back row) are European Space Agency (ESA) astronaut Léopold Eyharts, astronaut Garrett Reisman and astronaut Dan Tani, all flight engineers.

And the website also has short descriptions of what each person will be doing on the mission:

Some samples...
Commander Peggy A. Whitson - Whitson is the commander for Expedition 16. This is her second tour of duty aboard the station. She also was a flight engineer and science officer for Expedition 5 in 2002. Whitson also worked underwater as a NEEMO 5 crew member in 2003. + Biography

Flight Engineer Daniel M. Tani - Tani will fly to the station aboard space shuttle Discovery on STS-120 and join Expedition 16 as a flight engineer. He will return home aboard space shuttle Atlantis on mission STS-122. + Biography

Eveyone's either a flight engineer or the commander. But what will our jaguh kampung will be doing?...
Spaceflight Participant Sheikh Muszaphar Shukor - Sheikh Muszaphar Shukor will launch with Expedition 16 and land with Expedition 15. + [no Biography linked].

Ahem... that's as concise as it gets... he goes up, wastes some oxygen, and he comes down. And THAT folks is what our tax-payers are paying over 500 millions Ringgit for. Wasteful and grossly misplaced national pride. Well... that and a live test on the trajectory of ejaculate when one masturbates in space. Because judging from the amount of respect our 'space flight participant' is getting from NASA, wanking will be about all he's allowed to do.
Another Malaysia Boleh !

nice reading. but dun take it so seriously

We could rather give a datuk-ship for people who has helped tons of communities in the country. Fixing roads, doing donations, getting everything done...

And, I would say it's a pretty good accomplishment if they launch a satelite which can give 100% BROADBAND coverage all OVER Malaysia and it doesn't care wherever you live in Malaysia, you get broadband.

Or, making vandal-proof toilet stalls. Or, making better universities.

I know, space journeys are fun and interesting, but since it's just a free air ticket, just keep it low for a moment. I heard from one source that the astronauts got their suits all pasted with Malaysia flag. Eh, one also enough lah... no need all over the spaceship. We really afraid that people all over the world gonna label them as "attention-seekers"!!

Also, why is he insisting on calling a proton as a benz? Participant means participant la..what astronaut? visit means visit la, what new dimension!?

I loled too hard!! Hey, I forgot to add that yesterday's TV1's interview is like watching a comedy. Me and my bro lol-ed too hard watching these guys telling the whole world!

edit: checked the wikipedia: Angkasawan program wiki

I read and read and read about the making... and the research... and stumbled onto this:

Malaysian Food in Space - code FIS - Increase the variety and quality of food available to space travelers by identifying new food items (specifically typical Malaysian dishes) that are appropriate for consumption during space flight.

I cannot think of how any of the malaysian dishes could digest well in space when consumed. I thought when one goes to space, one should only eat foods which will work properly in the alimentary canal during space travel? Like those cereal bars, power bars, low-carb diet, and stuff like that?

Space travel food consumption

Well, i guess that will happen, this event will always being seen by younger generations as a step by Malaysia towards a more modern era. they will continue thinking that malaysia is really progressing, until they are old enough to realize that all the "achievements" by the malaysian government is actually nothing much to be proud of.

does this situation sound familiar to all of us?

i wish my bolehland ministers could be this proud if SIA gave me a free ticket TERMASUK CUKAI to Africa.

I dreamt of it since I was ten, I think I will enjoy my journey to Africa, and the stay at the exotic Wakuku Walala Hotel.
