Probably because they took too many shortcuts in the construction and QC.

I don't think I'll trust any M'sia future space programs if they slacked off too much in the construction and also those quality control, and excessive subcontractings.

My old school's computer lab's floor's cracking, tiles popping out, and then huge cracks are seen on walls. Needless to say, upon closer inspection, the lab is actually sinking!!

Wth are these people doing? Have they got any common sense? Have they know any consequences of doing slipshod work??

LOL! You have too much confidence in our scientists. We haven't even begun to build hobby rockets, much less our own "space programme".

Under our present government, we are only qualified to buy our way to space.

Haha!! Yeah, previously, I *did* have the confidence in them because, they have the expertise and all the equipments back in all of our Local unis and public research centres.

But with the "slacking off" and hasty attitude, even no rocket scientist will tell that they could be failing everyone!!

Yeah, they haven't started any development on any other space transport modules and equipments, and yet they are claiming themselves that they are more developed than Korea! (Korea hadn't got a chance to fly up to the space, but Samsung has their parts in the space!)

Actually, we lost the age YEARS ago. I think the rot started when our government decided to switch everyone to the national language, instead of English in tertiary education. By the time they translated the textbooks into Bahasa Malaysia, they were usually obsolete.

Yes, in fact, we have just stopped short of claiming we are better than the Chinese. Maybe we can buy ourselves a ride to the moon with the Chinese and then declare ourselves superior to Europe and Russia who have never been to the moon!

agreed with what u said adrian, but not the language part..

look at taiwan, japan, korea. they don't really speak english but they are developed countries. after all, language is a tool. i still believe it's the mentality and industrial adaptation capability that decide what our nation is capable of.

so whats in our mind ar? aiya..slack and sip teh tarik first la...

"our ____ is still the cheapest in this region"

Actually, I'm not saying that using a non-English language as a medium of study will stifle education. But it was done for the WRONG reasons and done without proper thought and planning.

There's a difference between cultures that have had decades, if not centuries, of education in their own language (e.g. Japan, China, Germany, Korea, etc.) and one that has always been based on the English model, which then suddenly decides to switch to a different language.

Let's not forget that the Japanese, Germans, Koreans, etc. all have credible scientists and educators churning out tons of NEW books written in their language. Of course, I'm not talking about cheap novels on ghosts and romances, but genuine works of science and engineering. Unfortunately, Malaysia does not have such a culture.

When was the last time we had a tertiary textbook written by anyone in Malaysia??? Even the medical schools here use textbooks written by Indian lecturers! Yes, our government laughs at India and say we are better than them because we have "gone to space" AHEAD of them, but hey, at least their textbooks are used worldwide, and certainly in our country for many, many years now.

Perhaps in the good old days when we used to uphold the British tradition of education did we have people with the capability to produce our own books. It's very obvious that the quality of our educators have suffered greatly since then. I still remember how strict our teachers were about the quality of our education. We had to earn each mark. Getting As was not a walk in the park. It was literally a miracle.

But switching to the Malay medium virtually instantly meant sidelining all those classically-trained teachers and putting in place freshies who were not trained the same tradition, but rather quickly pushed out to handle the sudden load. This is why we have teachers who are supposed to teach students how to use the computers... and end up being taught by the students instead.

Because of the misguided decision to switch to Bahasa Malaysia, instead of sticking to English, we screwed an entire generation (or two) of Malaysians. We end up with a new breed of teachers who are only acceptable to reasonably good in Bahasa Malaysia and definitely much poorer in English and hard sciences than teachers in the good old days.

Just a note, my parents who only had "O" level education (a real achievement in those days!) can speak and write better English than many graduates and TEACHERS of the English language today. It's obvious that the quality of their "low-class" secondary education in those days is FAR, FAR superior to the quality of tertiary education in Malaysia today.
