TOEFL - Test of English as a Foreign Language

Hey everyone,

For those who have taken this test, what do you think about it?
It is a good way to judge someone's English?

I scored 280/300 with writing of 30/30 & essay of 6/6

and because of that, i have to take ENG102 (Writing 2) rather than ESL

ENG is English classes native speakers have to take.
ESL is English as Second Language.

I have to compete with americans, but my english is not that great.

to me TOEFL is screwed up. i have a friend who is super good in English (beyond my level) scored only 5/6 for essay.

If i were to take SAT i think i would have scored poorly on English

If that test was given to the high school students in any large USA city, or in any large USA university, I can give you a 100% guarantee that their average marks(score) would be much lower than the ones you obtained.

why do you say so ? usually they take SAT which in my opinion is super tough for me.

Well, considering that most score poorly enough to have to take ENG 011, I think you should be proud that you get to start at the 102 level.

i dont feel proud, i felt punished because some people get to take ESL 408 and skip ESL407. i know my english is not that good. maye my grammar is good, but vocab wise, no good.

Well, if you strongly feel that you can't handle ENG 102. You might want to start talking to someone to see if going to a ESL class instead, is an option.

i've already talked to that person, but he insist on me taking ENG /faint

TOEFL? I remember taking it a long time ago. At that time, the paper was simple. IMHO, the British 1119 paper was much, much tougher.

I forgot why I had to take it but I remember thinking it was kinda stupid since everyone knows that the British 1119 paper was of a much higher standard. Since I had already taken it and did pretty okay, there should not have been the need for me to take the TOEFL paper.
