Yup, there's no proof whether they gained any advantage from Ferrari's data, but the punishment is mainly for the attempt to use Ferrari's data.

They were almost banned from 2007 and 2008.

Hmm.. Is there even a need to prove that they benefited from the theft? I mean, the theft itself should be punished, not the use of proceeds from the theft.

I mean, let's say you get caught snatching a handbag from a lady. Should you not be punished for that act? Or let go just because you didn't have the time to make use of the money stolen, or sell off the jewelry inside the bag?

Like I said, the constructors points deduction is almost bearable.

But the fine? Max Mosley added further on Saturday that this now made McLaren have a budget for 2008 that was the same as Williams. Such an observation calls into question the impartiality of the WMSC.

I was in the F1 forum, most of the people, including Mclaren fans were thinking a complete 2007 season ban would be a more suitable ban, or at least a few races ban.

Clearly, Bernie had persuaded them due to the business nature of the sport.

Well, TBH, this scandal has been good to F1 in the business sense. Like it or not, people are attracted controversy or scandals. Interest in F1 has surged as a result of this scandal. I'll bet they are secretly quite pleased.
