Default Microsoft Vista will ignore your monitor!

Quote:
A REPORT said an implementation of a system wide content protection scheme in Microsoft Vista will mean many screens will display a "monitor revoked" message.

According to an article in PC World, the scheme called PVP-OPM is intended to stop pirated disks from displaying their content.

But a side effect means that the same scheme will lock out displays which don't support PVP-OPM.

The same report, here, claims that there are very few wide screen desktop monitors which will support the scheme. So even if you're law abiding you're going to be in trouble.

And Blu-ray and Toshiba HD DVDs need Windows Vista, while Windows XP won't support HDCP, Intel's "high bandwidth digital content protection". So there's no point sticking with your old OS.

Oh yes, the OS times they are a changing. And the hardware manufacturers are no doubt rubbing their hands with glee at the prospect.

Another reason NOT to get Vista. So far, I have skipped every other OS, and I have been fine.

Means more bucks for other people. And tightening of belts on the user's end.

i agree... skip this os...
hopefully, but not likely, open source os's will support next gen dvd's without all the useless annoying stuff...

looks like microsoft is gonna lose some market share ( smiles gleefully) this is just like the "product activation" on the Office XP, 2003 i reinstalled windows ( not reformatting ) and the activation rejected my perfectly legal copy... and i hadn't changed my specs... got it fixed by calling microsoft ( not hard ) but really annoying that i had to waste my time that way...

vista is/will divide the computer market into two classes, not based on performance, but on how well the hardware manufacturer sucks up to microsoft's standards...

ubuntu kubuntu

Shoot me, but IMHO, instead of wasting so much time and money, and frustrating so many users, why don't they just sell their DVDs at a lower price, like say RM 20-30 (USD 5-8)?

Even if that's 2-3X more than what the pirates are selling their discs at, I think most people will prefer to buy original DVDs at that price. Right now, they are spending more and more money on ever more restrictive measures, all of which requires them to extract more money from the consumer.

Who wins in the end? Lawyers...
